Social Media Statistics of 2013

We’ve reached a time where social media is no longer a novelty or trend. If you haven’t joined the bandwagon, following are some stats to prove you should. Breaking news can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube. As of January 2013, the five largest social networks based on active monthly users were: Facebook (1 billion), YouTube (800 million) and Google+ (343 million) followed by Twitter and LinkedIn with 200 million active monthly users each.

As of August 2013, Facebook has reached 699 million daily active users. And Hubspot reports that 70% of business-to-consumer marketers have acquired a customer through Facebook.

Twitter is the fastest growing social network in the world, with the fastest growing age demographic of 55 to 64 year olds, registering an increase in active users of 79%. Teens are increasingly turning to Twitter, with 24% of online teens now using Twitter, up from 16% in 2011.

On average, people are connected to 89 pages and groups on Facebook. 77% of buyers are more likely to buy from a company if its CEO uses social media. (War of Words: Myth-Busting Social Media, SEO & Content Marketing). 90% of Inc. 500 companies use at least one major social media platform. And 62% say social media is either “somewhat” or “very” necessary to their growth. (Heidi Cohen)

Google is starting to integrate more Google+ features into the search results, this is not a network to be ignored. According to Simply Measured, 70% of brands have presences on Google+, up 4% from Q4 2012 and Google’s share of social logins increased from 25% to 31% during 4Q12.

Instagram now boasts over 130 million active monthly users.  There are over 16 billion photos on the service altogether and 45 million photos are uploaded to Instagram every day. The company, which just introduced a 15 second video function, is not yet 3 years old. With 8500 likes per second, over 1 billion likes are given to users each day.

100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. If you’ve been putting off adding video to your strategy, now’s the time to give it a go.

Pinterest is now home to 70 million users, an increase of 20 million since February of 2013. Pinterest ascends to the leader spot in Ecommerce sharing, beating out Facebook by 4%, becoming increasingly valuable for online retailers.

Every second two new people join LinkedIn and the average household income of these users is $109,000. More than 2.6 million companies have LinkedIn Company Pages.
Can you recall the last time your cell phone was not within ear shot? In the last 2 years, the number of people accessing the Internet via mobile phone is 818.4 million – an increase of 60.3%. According to Juniper Research, by 2017, revenues from streaming and download services on mobile and tablet devices will reach $9.5 billion.
